TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)
What is TMS?
TMS stands for “transcranial magnetic stimulation.” TMS is a revolutionary, noninvasive, FDA-cleared therapy used to treat Depression and OCD. TMS uses a targeted magnetic pulse, similar to what is used in an MRI machine to activate parts of the brain, resulting in symptom improvement. Because it is not a depression drug, TMS Therapy does not have the same side effects that are associated with traditional antidepressant medications.
TMS Therapy is:
- Non-invasive, meaning that it does not involve surgery. It does not require any anaesthesia or sedation, as the patient remains awake and alert during the treatment
- Non-systemic, meaning that it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the bloodstream throughout the body.
How does TMS work?
Step1:
- Relax in a comfortable TMS chair.
- Sit back and relax and our TMS trained staff will ensure your absolute comfort and answer any questions you may have about your TMS experience.
- We keep you as comfortable as possible as you progress on your road to success.
Step2:
- Your session is completed in less than 20 minutes.
- You are fully awake and comfortable in your TMS reclining chair during the 20 – minute treatment session.
- You can feel free to read a book, watch TV or chat with our staff while you complete your treatment session.
- There is no post-treatment lethargy and you can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. So once your 20-minute treatment session is over, you’re on your way!
Step3:
- TMS therapy requires 36 sessions to provide sustainable relief from depression symptoms. You must return to the office five days a week, but the team always works with you to suit your schedule.
